Beach tourism in Jogja is always interesting to visit. As a tourist destination, Jogja is almost never empty of visitors, especially during holidays. There are many exciting and charming tourist attractions that are suitable to be visited with those closest to you.

Enjoying weekends or holidays in Jogja is always fun. There are many choices of interesting places to visit. One of the tourist destinations in Jogja that is always crowded with visitors is the beach.

1. Seruni Beach

Seruni beach is located in Tepus Subdistrict, Gunung Kidul. This beach is the second tourism object developed by the local people of Tepus after Pok Tunggal beach. Just like its name which means gold, Seruni beach is one of the places where the local people of Tepus got some income.

Seruni beach has its main attractions which are the stretch of the white sand and the water fall located near the sea coastal. However, to be able to see this waterfall panorama, the visitors are suggested to come in rainy season because of its water debit.
The environment condition of Seruni beach is clean and quiet enough because there are not yet many visitors who know about this beach. Even so, the facilities like toilet and bathroom, food court area, and parking area are provided already.

At high tide, the waves of Seruni beach are quite big and it could reach partially the sands area of this beach. The visitors are not allowed to swim in the beach because it’s dangerous. The visitors who come to this place usually like to play in the seashore line while enjoying the beauty of Seruni beach and while taking some pictures

Because of its location that’s really so closed to Pok Tunggal beach, this beach has the same route access with Pok Tunggal beach. From the city center of Yogyakarta, Seruni beach is located about 70 km away or we can take about 2 hours by motor vehicle. About half kilometers before reaching this beach, we will find the rocky dirt route in the right side of Pok Tunggal beach or in the left side of Seruni beach. From here we could see already the ocean views.

2. Wediombo Beach

The most recommended one perhaps is Wediombo Beach! The location is in Jepitu Village at Girisubo Sub-District. In terms of name, “Wedi” means sand while “Ombo” means vast. As the name suggests, the beach is known for its vastness. Aside from that, the beauty is undoubted.

As compared to others, Wediombo Beach has the longest and widest shoreline. Not to mention it is located at the very end of Gunung Kidul Regency. Plus, it features various types of landscapes including a sandy shoreline and coral rocks. The next impressive feature is the crystal clear sweater. Some big rocks also reside on the shore, preventing big waves from getting near the shoreline. No wonder, tourists can swim safely there. What is more? On the horizon, tourists may see green hills as well. Moreover, the atmosphere is warm and the nuance is peaceful.

So, what should tourists do once arriving Wediombo Beach? Most of them would get in the water right away, for sure. That means swimming becomes the best thing to do there. Have no worries. Even kids can enjoy the activity safely. The chunks or coral rocks protect some parts of the sea from big waves, after all. No wonder, it creates a natural pond where tourists can take a bath and swim comfortably. Not to mention the water is clear and warm!

After swimming and playing water, tourists must explore the shoreline and collect some good photos either using their camera or smartphone. Moreover, many good objects are worth a photo shot! These include the coral reefs, which are located either on the shoreline or sea. Another wonderful object to capture would be the sunset! However, tourists must come at the right time, which is during dusk or in the afternoon. For those who don’t carry a camera, they can simply conduct beach walking. Thanks to the vastness of the shoreline.

Another thing that tourists must do in Wediombo Beach is camping. As long as visitors carry their tent and other required equipment, they can spend the night in that area comfortably. The coastal nuance is quite relaxing! At night, moreover, it is possible to conduct a BBQ party with either friends or families! Here is the good news. Some villagers sell seafood in that location, so tourists can buy some and grill them later at night.

3. Sundak Beach

Sundak Beach is located in Pule Gundes village, Sidoharjo, Tepus, Gunung Kidul district. Sundak is close to other beaches such as Kukup Beach, Krakal Beach, Drini Beach, and Baron Beach. This beach has its own uniqueness compared to other beaches in Yogyakarta. Initially, Sundak Beach named Wedibedah (the split sand) originated from this natural phenomenon. When rainy season came, there was much water from the land flowing to the sea. Consequently, the land of the beach split to make a river-look from.

In 1976, the name of this beach changed. The name of Wedibedah changed into Sundak as an abbreviation of Asu (Javanese language for a dog) and Landak (Javanese language for sea urchin). The name Sundak is taken from the quarrel between a dog and the sea urchin. In an afternoon, the dog belonging to a local resident named Arjasangku was running about the seaside and entered the cave where it met a sea urchin. Being starving, the dog tried to prey on the sea urchin. Then, the fighting was happened and finally the dog successes in eating half of the sea urchin body. Arjasangku saw half of the sea urchin body was still in the dog’s mouth. Since then, the name Wedibedah changed into Sundak as an abbreviation of Asu (Javanese language for the dog) and Landak (Javanese language for sea urchin). Furthermore, Arjasangku was astonished that his dog was soaking wet after getting out of the cave. Accidentally, besides finding a half body of sea urchin, he also found a spring. The news of the discovery of this spring immediately spread because the local people around Sundak have been living in dryness.

In addition to offering its silent historical witnesses, Sundak Beach also presents a special panorama of natural conditions. The coral cliffs on the East and West side of the beach are good for background photos. The white sand stretch also adds to the beauty of the beach. Besides that, there is a small corals stretch in the seashore that covered by moss, and it feels soft on the feet. There also a Warong that peddles a number of menus such as grilled fish, rice with vegetable and chicken noodles.

The entrance ticket to Sundak Beach is IDR 2, 000,-/each person, parking IDR 2,000 (motorcycle) and IDR 3,000 (car). Besides that to reach this beach, you can take public transport (bus) from Giwangan bus station. After arriving at Wonosari market, take another bus toward Krakal and Kukup Beach. You will arrive at Sundak Beach in about 40 minutes or an hour.

Furthermore, the local people are very careful about the cleanliness of this beach. Besides it has a water spring, Sundak Beach also gives income from the tourist visits. For the local people surrounding the beach who have experiences dryness until now, Sundak is an oasis.
