Indonesian Tourist Guide Association (ITGA) was established as a result of Himpunan Duta Wisata Indonesia (HWDI) Convention at Pertamina Cottages Kuta Beach on March 27, 1983. This first national convention was initiated by Joop Ave, former Minister for Tourism, Post and Telecommunication of Republic of Indonesia. The convention was attended by nine provincial guide association and Bali Guide Association as the host.

During the Second Convention on October 5, 1988 at Palembang, South Sumatera, HDWI had been replaced into Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia (HPI). Hence, HPI is the official association of tourist guides in Indonesia. The National Board of HPI so called Dewan Pimpinan Pusat (DPP), Provincial Board is Dewan Pimpinan Daerah (DPD) and Regency Board is Dewan Pimpinan Cabang (DPC).

Indonesian Tourist Guide Association is a non-profit, non-political organization of licensed and individual tourist guides. The organization main purpose is to bind, ensure and promote the tourist guides are recognized as the ambassadors of the country.
